“This is just a silly idea. The businesses still cater to patrons with vehicles parked at the curbs. Especially older patrons. People will park anyway and cause traffic nightmares.

“I currently live in Plum Boro, and frequent the strip at least twice a month to shop and visit the strip various restaurants. To put this proposal thru would be detrimental to the Strip District! less foot traffic=Less revenue for shops, vendors and of course the city. Not a good action to take!”

I do a lot of volunteer work at St. Stan’s on 21st and the tourist tell me all the time how much they love the hustle bustle of neighborhood and means the uniqueness of Penn Ave and how it currently is! 2 lanes are essential for driving/parking/shopping/deliveries. I shop every week in the strip because it is “easy”. 1 lane and I am sure ugly changes will ruin the neighborhood/feel/history/business.

It has worked well on Beechwood Blvd and in other locations. However, this proposal will do much more harm than good.. The merchants are correct. It will stifle business. The proposed alterations to the flow of traffic through the Strip District should be rejected.”

“I have been visiting the strip district regularly since the mid 80’s. To move forward with the closure of one lane is a major mistake. It will certainly create traffic jams that many people from out of town such as my wife and I, will not be willing to negotiate. We live in Grove City and I think nothing of making the drive to the strip. However I have no interest in sitting in traffic at the end of this drive, no matter how much I enjoy the strip. We have already stopped going to Heinz Hall and the Benedum because of heavy traffic – resulting from limiting traffic to one lane from the convention center to the point.

Many friends of mine from other cities love the strip as it is.
It is historic and people like that is a preserved part of the city.
You will ruin the whole vibe and ambiance of this area if you change it to what you believe is a modernization of the area.

They can use Smallman, River Ave or the River trail.

“I live in the Strip District one block off of Smallman and 2 blocks off of Penn. Reducing Penn to one plane for cars and adding a bike lane would be a terrible idea. The businesses need the on-street parking and need two driving lanes to avoid even more congestion and traffic jams. A bike lane would make everything worse and I have only seen 2 bicyclists ever use the bike lanes that start by the 16th Street bridge going into the city. Bike lanes make the traffic much worse and are not utilized by hardly anyone.”

“I am an Uber/Lyft driver who has lived in & around Pittsburgh almost all of my life — over 50 years. I spend a LOT of time driving through the Strip. I love and support bike lanes and am pleased to have them throughout the city. HOWEVER, I do not think that this stretch of Penn Ave is a good place to put a bike lane. send that bike lane down Smallman St instead and keep maximum access for automobile traffic on Penn Ave. It is already congested enough. Limiting lanes for automobile traffic between 16th and 22nd is a BAD idea. PLEASE do not do it.”
